Subway staff told a CBC reporter that a man, who appeared to be under the influence of drugs, entered the restaurant at Portage Avenue and Balmoral Street and became agitated.

He locked the doors with everyone inside and then let staff leave by the back door, they said.

Officers had the restaurant surrounded for more than an hour, putting up police tape around the Portage and Balmoral intersection.

A man in handcuffs was seen in the back of an ambulance.

Staff said it appears the man trashed the restaurant's office while inside.

Officers pulled the tape down at about 11:30 a.m. but remained at the scene until shortly before noon.
