Terry Fox, who lost his right leg to cancer, set out on a historic run across Canada to raise money for cancer research in 1980. Fox never finished the ambitious cross-country run — he died of cancer in 1981 in a Vancouver hospital.

Millions of dollars have been raised toward cancer research since his death.

And on Sunday, a small group of runners converged at Winnipeg's City Hall and headed west down Portage Avenue with a procession of vehicles and police cars in tow to commemorate Fox's historic journey.

The run was expected to end at 3 p.m. just past the Perimeter Highway near Racetrack Road and the MTS Iceplex.
