Winnipeg woman killed in Peru bus crash
A Winnipeg woman has died in a bus crash in Peru during the holiday weekend.
Margaret Pidlaski died on Friday, family members confirmed to CBC News on Tuesday.
Pidlaski was the director of adult English-language programs for the Manitoba government's Labour and Immigration Department.
Cousin-in-law Deborah Pidlaski described Margaret as an avid world traveller who had survived a bus crash in Mexico almost 30 years ago.
"She was down in Mexico and she was in a very bad bus accident in which only she and, I think, one other person survived. They went over a cliff," she said.
Deborah Pidlaski said family members are still waiting for details about the fatal crash, including where in Peru it happened.
Manitoba's Minister of Immigration Jennifer Howard said Pidlaski's enthusiasm was critical to the success of the English-language programs.
"The fact that Margaret was so passionate about working with newcomers but also had the experience of working with those organisations [that aid them], they trusted her so that could build the partnership more effectively," Howard said.
Those who knew Pidlaski will spend time deciding how best to honour her, Howard said.
