A 20-year-old woman is dead after a head on collision on Highway 2, two kilometres east of St Claude.

The 27-year-old driver of the other vehicle was taken to hospital via STARS air ambulance. He remains in critical condition.

RCMP say prior to the crash, police were pursuing the man's vehicle after reports of an impaired driver in Notre Dame, Man. at 11 p.m.

Police found the driver at a gas station in St. Claude. The suspect sped off once RCMP tried to stop the vehicle.

RCMP pursued the suspect but eventually ended the chase because the suspect's vehicle was travelling at excessive speeds.

Shortly thereafter the driver slammed head on into another vehicle on Highway 2 two kilometres east of St. Claude, RCMP said.

The driver of the other vehicle — a 20-year-old woman from Napinka — was pronounced dead at the scene.

RCMP continue to investigate the crash.
