About 150 cows were killed in a barn fire in the Quebec town of Saint-Édouard-de-Lotbinière, situated between Trois-Rivières and Quebec City.

Firefighters spent hours Wednesday night trying to gain control of the flames. By 11 p.m., the fire was still not completely extinguished.

The building is a total loss.

Provincial police said that two people were taken to hospital to be treated for shock.

Highway 226 was closed in both directions.

Investigators will work to determine where the fire started and what may have sparked the flames.
