Cartierville tenants left in the cold for weeks
Building on Ranger Street, which has had previous problems with heating
Housing advocates say tenants living in a multi-storey apartment building on Ranger Street are struggling to stay warm after weeks without heat.
Patrice Sansregret, a community organizer with tenants rights group CLAC, said he learned about the problem after receiving calls from tenants in the building.
"It's the same story over and over again," he said. "It's like people are living in a third world country."
The building at 11815 Ranger Street has had problems with its heating system in the past.
The building changed owners on Jan. 1.
The new owner, who was on site Thursday afternoon with firefighters and housing activists, said they were made aware of the heating issue just yesterday.
Landlord Man Sun Yeung said he hired technicians to fix the boiler system, and heating began to be restored Thursday evening. He also said the 16-unit building will undergo an inspection on Friday.
Firefighters contacted the Red Cross to assess the situation and meet with the families.
