Crown wants Que. man named dangerous offender

The Crown is asking for Richard Reber, of Pointe-Claire, Que., to be declared a dangerous offender.

The Crown is asking for a Pointe-Claire, Que. man to be declared a dangerous offender.

Richard Reber, 50, pleaded guilty to a range of charges including the sexual assault of a 4-year-old girl and producing child pornography after police decrypted files on his home computer.

Reber looked straight ahead with no expression in a Montreal courtroom as the prosecution detailed the crimes he committed.

Prosecutor Isabelle Grondin asked that Reber be sentenced to 13 years and be labeled a dangerous offender, meaning he would remain behind bars indefinitely.

Reber was first arrested in March 2009 during a Canada-wide investigation called Project Salvo. He was charged with possession and distribution of child pornography, then released on bail.

After police uncovered video files Reber made of his sexual assault on the 4-year-old, he was arrested again in June of last year and remained in custody.

The four-year-old girl told police Reber had sexually assaulted her at least 100 times and called him a pig. Several months later, police were able to corroborate the child's testimony after police in B.C. arrested a man who had Reber's video on his computer.

The court could decide to declare Reber a long-term offender instead of a dangerous offender, which would mean supervision of up to ten years after he completes his sentence.

The defence is asking for between six months and two years, on top of the 14 months Reber has already served.

The judge will render his decision on Oct. 25.
