Election day snafus include ballot boxes falling onto highway, fake calls
Polling boxes fell onto highway and fraudulant calls and messages saying election is postponed have circulated
Élections Québec has already had warn to voters about fraudulent messages going around saying the election has been postponed.
And Sunday evening, several ballot fixes fell from a truck onto a highway in the Gaspé, spilling advance ballots onto the pavement.
The agency assured voters in the region that everything had been cleaned up and nothing was lost.
It said the boxes fell out when the truck transporting them from Matane to Amqui hit a hole in the road and its door opened.
"Some of the envelopes had fallen out of the boxes, but none of their seals were broken," said Julie St-Arnaud, a spokesperson for Quebec's Chief Electoral Officer (DGEQ).
As for the fraudulent messages, the DGEQ took to Twitter Sunday evening, a little more than 12 hours before polls opened Monday morning, to say the election is most definitely not postponed and that people should disregard any automated calls suggesting otherwise.
Des appels automatisés véhiculeraient de l'info indiquant que les élections sont reportées. Il s'agit d'une fausse information. Les élections auront lieu comme prévu demain, le 1er octobre. Elections Quebec also tweeted that some people have reported receiving a text message that implies voters will be paid to go out and vote on Monday.
This is also false, wrote the agency, affirming that under no circumstance would voters be remunerated for casting a ballot.
Important! Un faux message texte circule présentement. Sachez qu'en aucun cas, Élections Québec ne demanderait une rétribution ou n’offrirait une rémunération liée à l'exercice du droit de vote aux élections générales.
