'King of drums' Guy Nadon dies at 82

Guy Nadon worked as a musician for more than 60 years, taking part in the city's vibrant jazz scene.

Guy Nadon, nicknamed Quebec's "King of Drums," died early Sunday morning at Maison-Neuve residence in Montreal. 

The 82-year-old had suffered from kidney disease for several years.

Nadon worked as a musician for more than 60 years, taking part in the city's vibrant jazz scene and playing alongside stars like Charles Aznavour and Buddy Rich.

He performed at the Montreal International Jazz Festival more than 30 times, holding his final concert in June of this year with organizers billing it as a "33rd and final victory lap."

In 1998, he took home the Oscar Peterson Award.

Nadon was also the subject of a 1992 documentary entitled, Le roi du drum, made by Quebec filmmaker Serge Giguère.

His autobiography, Guy Nadon, le roi du drum, was released in 2009.
