'I have prostate cancer': MP André Arthur

André Arthur, the flamboyant and outspoken radio host turned federal politician, announced Thursday he has prostate cancer.

The 62-year-old former "shock jock" told reporters in Quebec City he will start radiation and chemotherapy treatment in mid-December, once Parliament breaks for the holidays.

He said his doctor discovered the prostate cancer during a routine checkup in mid-November. The tumour is "aggressive," but Arthur saidhis life is not in danger.

Arthur said he decided to announce his diagnosis because it was his duty, as a politician, to be forthcoming with his constituents about his health.

He plans to return to Parliament in January after the holiday break and has no immediate plans to give up his seat.

"That's exactly the window of opportunity I needed to get myself treated. If I become impotent or totally incapable of physical activity, then I will resign.''

Arthur was elected as an independent member of Parliament in January 2006 to represent the Portneuf-Jacques Cartier riding west of Quebec City.

He said all things considered, he feels fine, and considers himselflucky. He urged all men to get checked regularly for prostate cancer.
