Pedestrian dies after being hit by car in downtown Montreal

A 46-year-old woman has died after being hit by a car in downtown Montreal early Monday morning. The driver, a 24-year-old man, was arrested for impaired driving.

A pedestrian has died after being hit by a car in downtown Montreal.

According to Montreal police, the incident happened just after 2 a.m. on Monday near the corner of Crescent Street and René-Lévesque Boulevard. 

When officers showed up at the scene, the victim — a 46-year-old woman — was unconscious. After paramedics arrived, she was taken to hospital in critical condition.

Montreal police confirmed her death shortly after noon on Monday.

The driver, a 24-year-old man, was arrested for impaired driving.

Police say he was heading west on René-Lévesque when he struck the pedestrian.

The driver is expected to meet with investigators later today.

According to Caroline Chèvrefils, a spokesperson with the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal, investigators have spoken to witnesses and they're expected to analyze nearby security footage.
