Longueuil, Que., police arrest armed man after restaurant standoff

Police have arrested an armed man who barricaded himself inside a restaurant in Longueuil, Que., on Montreal's south shore.

Suspect allowed customers to leave, police say his motivations unclear

Police have arrested an armed man who barricaded himself inside a restaurant in Longueuil, Que., on Montreal's south shore.

Longueuil police said the situation started at about 11:45 a.m. ET when a man entered a restaurant near the corner of Saint-Hélène Street and Curé Poirier Boulevard West.

The man was armed with a gun and the situation escalated quickly, according to police, though he allowed customers to leave. 

The restaurant was evacuated and police cordoned off a wide area as they negotiated.

Police apprehend the suspect shortly before 1:30 p.m. ET. 

Police say it's not clear what the man's motivations were.

The man has been taken to hospital for evaluation.
