Manon Massé wants to become new face of Québec Solidaire

Manon Massé, one of the two remaining Québec Solidaire members with a seat in the National Assembly, wants to become the next female spokesperson for the party.

Massé made the announcement Sunday morning alongside supporters in her riding of Sainte-Marie–Saint-Jacques.

She has been interim co-spokesperson for ​Québec Solidaire since January, when longtime leader and party co-founder Françoise David stepped away from political life.

"We are at an important crossroads in Québec Solidaire," she said in a statement.

"I strongly believe that our party has the capacity to bring together and touch the hearts of more and more people."

​Québec Solidaire, a pro-sovereignist, left-wing party, does not have a traditional political leadership structure; rather, it appoints a male and female spokesperson to articulate the views of its members.

Andrés Fontecilla, who is currently Massé's counterpart as spokesperson, announced he would be leaving the job in May to focus on winning a seat in the next provincial general election in 2018.

There are no candidates yet for the male spokesperson position. The positions will be filled at a party meeting in May. 

Massé has been MNA for Sainte-Marie–Saint-Jacques since 2014.

Last week, she scored a significant political victory after Quebec's chief electoral officer backed off plans to eliminate her riding. Massé was one of the main organizers behind opposition to the plan.
