Rallies are expected in several locations throughout the day to mark International Workers' Day on May 1.
Protesters say cuts to social services and education are hurting the province.
Earlier this morning, protesters blocked construction workers from entering the site of the new CHUM superhospital, leading to a standoff with police.
Police were also stationed early this morning at the foot of Jacques Cartier Bridge and the Port of Montreal in anticipation protesters could try to make their way there.
Teachers at Montreal's French-language school board also organized a "human chain" protest against education cuts.
