Residents of Montreal North have chosen Christine Black, a member of Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre's party, as their new borough mayor in a byelection.

Christine Black, a member of Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre's party, was elected mayor of Montreal North on Sunday.

Residents of Montreal North have chosen Christine Black as their new borough mayor in a byelection.

Black, a member of Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre's party, won with 69 per cent of the votes, netting three times as many votes as runner-up Kerlande Mibel of Projet Montréal.

Only 20 per cent of residents eligible to vote exercised their right, according to Montreal's elections bureau.

Four candidates were in the running to become the next mayor of the borough.

Black replaces Gilles Deguire, who resigned in January after being charged with sexual assault against a minor.
