The City of Montreal will hold a byelection to elect a new borough mayor in Montreal North before May 22.

Gilles Deguire, the former borough mayor, is under criminal investigation for an unspecified wrongdoing. That investigation prompted him to step down last Thursday.

Deguire, who took office in 2009, worked as a Montreal police officer for 30 years.

He worked for ten years as a political attaché for Bourassa-Sauvé MNA Line Beauchamp and served as Union Montreal's vice-president in the east end of Montreal island.

Montreal police are heading the investigation. Deguire has not been charged.

This will be the third byelection for the position of Montreal North borough mayor since 2007.
