Montreal taxi drivers at Trudeau airport get new dress code

Taxi drivers with permits to pick up passengers at Montreal's Trudeau airport will soon have to meet a new dress code.

They will be required to wear collared shirts, dress pants and dress shoes — and say goodbye to baseball caps, T-shirts, shorts and sandals.

​The new dress code was developed by taxi drivers in collaboration with Montreal's airport authority and is intended to reflect a professional appearance for tourists.

Stanley Bastien, a taxi driver who was part of the group who developed the new rules, said it will help change the "perception of cab drivers."

Bastien said he has had complaints from customers — and some have even refused rides. 

"It's a question of trust," he said. "We are the first contact with people from all around the world."

Not everyone is on board with the new rules.

Taxi driver Noel Joseph said he thinks casual clothes should be acceptable attire as long as they are clean.

"If it's very clean, that should be good," he said.  

"You know, I don't know why they want to force people to put something like a suit in the limousine, you know."

The new dress code will be in place as of Nov. 15.
