Heros, firsts, records and upsets: A timeline of the 1976 Montreal Olympics
A memorable moment (or two) for each day of the 21st Olympic Games
It was plagued by venue cost overruns, doping allegations and a boycott, but for 16 days in 1976, Montreal was the focus of the world as the 21st Olympic Games unfurled.
As with every instalment of the Olympics, records were set, favourites were upset and stars were made.
Teenaged Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci left the city as the indisputable Olympics darling, the first gymnast to score a perfect 10.
Montreal was also where Bruce Jenner became a household name. The American, who now identifies as a transgender woman and goes by Caitlyn, won gold in the decathlon, earning the unofficial title of the world's best athlete.
But the feats of the Romanian wunderkind and the American hero were only two highlights from Montreal's turn as an Olympic city. Here are a few more memorable moments.
