The City of Mirabel says it's in mourning after its mayor Patrick Charbonneau died seemingly of natural causes at 46 years of age.

In a statement posted to its website, the municipality, just northwest of Montreal in the Laurentians region, expressed its condolences to Charbonneau's friends and family, adding that flags on municipal buildings will fly at half-mast.

"His dedication, his passion for his community and his leadership have had a profound impact on the people of Mirabel," reads the statement.

A father to two children, Charbonneau was elected to Mirabel's municipal council in 2013 and became mayor in 2021. In May, he announced on social media that he would seek a second term in November's upcoming elections.

The city says it will communicate funeral details later.
