The former Canadiens defenceman came back to Montreal to host a comedy gala that raised funds for charity.

P.K. Subban's debut as a Just for Laughs gala host was a hit before he even said a word.

He was welcomed with a lengthy standing ovation and chants of "P.K!"

Fans couldn't get enough of the former Canadiens defenceman, who was unceremoniously shipped to Nashville in June.

Subban took a few swipes at his former team's management at the charity gala, whose proceeds will go to the Montreal Children's Hospital.

But he also took pains to thank the team for helping him get his start in the NHL.

Here are highlights, as recounted by those who were there.

Before the show even started, there were hugs...

And cheers.

Mayor Denis Coderre was among the big names in attendance.

The show was a fundraiser for Subban's philanthropic foundation.

He tried to lower expectations.

But Subban's dig at Habs management got cheers.

He also made reference to his famously banned 'triple low-five' with Carey Price.

Overall, the night was considered a success.

It also raised a lot of cash.
