Quebec Nov. 9 byelection: St-Henri—Ste-Anne

The byelection in St-Henri—Ste-Anne is to replace Liberal Marguerite Blais, who quit politics in August 2015.

Liberal Marguerite Blais held this seat from 2007 until her resignation in August 2015. The minister responsible for seniors in Jean Charest's cabinet from 2007 until 2012, Blais failed to get a cabinet post in the Philippe Couillard government.  After the death of her husband Jean-Guy Faucher earlier this year, Blais, 64, said she wanted to take time to enjoy her good health.

Blais was re-elected to her seat in 2014 with 52.5% of the vote, by a 11,540 majority over the PQ`s Véronique Fournier.

Riding description

The division of Saint-Henri—Sainte-Anne comprises Montreal's Sud-Ouest borough, as well as part of the borough of Ville-Marie between Saint-Antoine Street West, Square Victoria, McGill Street and de la Commune Street West

It also comprises the part of the Ville de Montréal situated in the borough of Ville-Marie and bounded as follows: Saint-Antoine Street West, Square Victoria Street, McGill Street, de la Commune Street West and the boundary of the borough of Ville-Marie.

Riding history

The riding has voted Liberal since it was created in 1994 when the Sainte-Anne and Saint-Henri ridings were fused. Since then, the riding has gained part of the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce and Westmount-Saint-Louis electoral districts.
