A water main break overnight Thursday led to flooding on a stretch of downtown on University between Sherbrooke and Milton streets.

Anik de Repentigny, a spokesperson for Montreal's Plateau-Mont-Royal borough, said the road had to be closed for repairs.

The city is handing out bottles of water to residents who had their water shut off, de Repentigny said.

She said it's not clear when the repairs will be completed.
