The Canadian Coast Guard says the decision was not taken lightly and made due to several factors like the odds of survival in the water and the number of hours put into the search which began Tuesday.

The search and rescue operation for two men from Havre-Saint-Pierre, Que., who disappeared while at sea over the weekend, was called off Thursday evening.

The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) says the decision was not taken lightly and made due to several factors like the odds of survival in the water, the objects they found during the search and the number of hours put into the operation. The agency said it gave its condolences to the family of the victims, said a spokesperson for Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

Grégory Landry and Nelson Boudreau both left the harbour at Havre-Saint-Pierre which is just off the Jacques Cartier Strait, Saturday, to make their way to Blanc-Sablon. They weren't heard from after their departure and were reported missing. A search operation began Tuesday.

The CCG and Canadian Armed Forces crisscrossed the water and the skies in an area stretching from Havre-Saint-Pierre until Harrington Harbour, including Blanc-Sablon.

The investigation into the men's disappearance has been transferred to Quebec provincial police.
