Sept-Îles teen downs 6 drinks, falls into coma after 'cool' mom gives him rum

A Sept-Îles mother whose son ended up in an alcohol-induced coma, is warning teenagers and their parents about the dangers of binge-drinking.

Mom says she'd rather have an honest relationship with her son and know what he's drinking

Marie-Claude Richard said she'd rather have an honest relationship with her son and know what he's drinking and how much, than having him go behind her back.

A Sept-Îles mother whose son ended up in an alcohol-induced coma, is warning teenagers and their parents about the dangers of binge-drinking.

Marie-Claude Richard posted her story on Facebook, when her 14-year-old son was still in a coma.

Richard said she blamed herself. She wrote on Facebook that as a 'cool' mom, she had given her son 10 ounces of rum, because he and his friends were supposed to be staying home last Friday.

In the end, Richard's son ended up going out with friends. She said he downed six mixed drinks made with the rum in about 20 minutes and ended up in an alcohol-induced coma.

He's recovering at home now, after being intubated for 12 hours.

Richard said she wanted to share her story on Facebook as a warning.

The post was shared close to 50,000 times. Some people thanked her for sharing and expressed their sympathy, while others said she deserved the death penalty.

Richard said people who criticize her are too quick to judge.

She said ultimately, she'd rather have an honest relationship with her son and know what he's drinking and how much.

She said she hasn't disciplined her son, because falling into a coma is the ultimate life lesson.
