Tailgaters, beware — officers with the Quebec provincial police service will be keeping their eyes peeled and ticket-writing hands ready in the coming weeks.

Quebec's automobile insurance board, the SAAQ, estimates a third of collisions in the province are caused by people who follow other drivers too closely. Those numbers often rise in the wintertime, and so the Sûreté du Québec will be out to raise awareness before the first flakes hit the ground.

People caught tailgating other cars could face fines of $100 plus fees and two demerit points.
