Police are investigating after a fire broke out this morning on the top floor of the three-storey building in downtown Montreal.

A spokesperson says the fire started around 5:40 a.m. on Drummond Street north of Ste-Catherine Street.

A woman suffered second-degree burns in the fire and was taken to hospital.

A firefighter on the scene told CBC reporter Elias Abboud that squatters had been living in the building.

Police said the building was "abandoned" and no one should have been living there.

It took 30 firefighters a little over an hour to bring the fire under control, said a spokesperson for the Montreal fire department.

Drummond Street reopened to traffic shortly after 8 a.m. Police are still trying to determine the cause of the fire.
