It will be a rainy start to the weekend for much of Quebec, with Environment Canada issuing a rainfall warning for the central and western regions of the province.

Rain is expected to begin Friday evening and continue throughout Saturday.

The agency said rainfall amounts of 24 to 45 millimetres are expected, with some areas possibly seeing up to 50 millimetres of precipitation.

The rain will lead to increased snowmelt in areas where snow is still present, and possible flooding in low-lying areas.

Environment Canada is warning of possible washouts near waterways as some streams and rivers could see significant increases in water levels and flow.

Montreal and areas south of the St. Lawrence River, just past Trois-Rivières, Que., were not covered by the warning, but rain is in the forecast.
