A winter warning is in effect for the Montreal region starting Saturday.

After a balmy Christmas Day, snow and freezing rain are expected to affect southwestern Quebec well into next week.

Environment Canada issued the warning for the Montreal Island area along with Châteauguay, La Prairie, Laval, Longueuil and Varennes.

Snow is expected to start late Saturday and continue Sunday, with possible freezing rain.

About 12 centimetres of snow is expected by late Sunday night.
