A 35-year-old man from Saguenay, Que. has been charged in connection with a fatal collision that killed an expecting couple and left a four-year-old boy in critical condition.

Yves Martin is charged with dangerous driving, impaired driving and criminal negligence causing death after his pick-up truck collided with the vehicle of Mathieu Perron and his pregnant partner, Vanessa Viger, on Saturday night. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The couple's four-year-old son was riding in the back seat and survived the crash, but is in critical condition at a hospital.

Saguenay resident Bernard Bouchard was sitting at his computer on Saturday night when he heard a loud noise outside. He looked out to see a car crash into a tree on his front lawn.

Bouchard said the boy in the back seat was awake.

"We told him to stay with us, we're his friends," he said.

A spokesman with the Saguenay police said many witnesses reported the suspect was driving at a high speed. He said blood samples still need to be analyzed to determine whether he had been drinking.

When he entered the Saguenay court house on Monday morning, Martin said he was sorry for what happened.
