1 in 10 students use food bank at NBCC St. Andrews campus
December is busy month, says operator
About one in 10 students at the New Brunswick Community College in St. Andrews use the on-campus food bank, says the operator.
The college started the food bank just before Christmas in 2011, she said.
"Students can struggle, I mean, you know, a lot of times their funding is dependent on an outside agency so it depends on you know on whether unfortunately all their i's are dotted and t's crossed," said Tatton.
"Sometimes it can be as simple as, you know, a flat tire or something along that line that affects their finances. So we thought with the food covered here on campus, students may be a little more comfortable accessing it than going to an outside department or community that they don't know."
The food bank is supported by the St. Stephen and St. George food banks and anything left over on campus also goes to the operation, said Tatton.
