One man dead, another charged after Moncton shooting

A 22-year-old man faces a first-degree murder charge in connection with the shooting death of a Moncton man.

Codiac Regional RCMP were called to an apartment building in downtown Moncton ​​​​around 9:20 p.m. Thursday for a report of shots being fired, RCMP spokesperson Const. Isabelle Beaulieu said.

Josh Daley was found "badly injured" inside the building at the corner of Gordon and Sangster streets. The 27-year-old was taken to hospital, where he died. 

Jake Mischiek was arrested "at a nearby residence a short time later" and taken into custody, Beaulieu said.

Mischiek was charged Friday and made a brief afternoon appearance in provincial court wearing a face mask and in a white full-body protective suit like those worn while painting.

Bernadette Richard, duty counsel for Mischiek, requested an adjournment to give him time to hire a lawyer. 

Mischiek is to remain in custody until his court appearance scheduled for June 25 at 9:30 a.m.

Mischiek nodded when Judge Luc J. Labonté asked him if he understood the charge of first-degree murder, a homicide that is both planned and deliberate.

The shooting occurred at an older blue home divided into multiple apartments two blocks north of Main Street. 

Michael Shermeppa lives in an apartment in the same building and said he heard arguing Thursday evening followed by a bang that sounded like something hitting the floor. He then saw police outside the building carrying rifles. 

He said he didn't know his neighbours. 

"I don't know who they were or what it was over, but it's a sin to see somebody getting killed over whatever the reasons may be," he said. 

Colten Cousineau, who lives across the street, said he saw police vehicles arriving with sirens blaring. 

"We [saw] a lot of people screaming and getting angry," he said.

"The cops went up into the house and then I [saw] them pull out a body. I wasn't sure if it was alive, but I heard them talking and saying 'stay with me.'"
