Police say a 58-year-old man from Quispamsis, N.B., died after his all-terrain vehicle fell through the ice late Saturday near Clifton Royal on the Kingston Peninsula.

Grand Bay-Westfield and Hampton RCMP responded to a call of two ATV riders who had fallen through the ice on the Kennebecasis River around 11:30 p.m.

Division Chief Shawn White of the Kennebecasis Valley Fire Department said an ice-rescue crew was sent out on the water just after 11 p.m. after the 911 dispatcher was able to locate one of the riders by the GPS on his cellphone.

White said it was determined the riders were close to Minister's Face, near Long Island. Rescuers had a long walk across the river to get to to them because they were unable to use their ATV due to the ice conditions.

Flashlight helps locate one man

White said one rider was located because he was shining the flashlight on his cellphone.

Rescuers placed him on a sled and pulled him back to shore.

White said that man was hypothermic but not injured. He was taken to hospital as a precaution.

RCMP say that person had fallen through the ice but managed to climb out.

The other man was located in the water by another crew. He was transported to shore and taken to hospital, but did not survive.

White said both ATVs remain submerged.
