Shediac firefighters save moose that had fallen into Shediac River
Shediac, N.B., firefighters rescued a young moose that had fallen through the ice in the Shediac River Saturday morning.
Half a dozen volunteer firefighters arrived at the river at 9:45 a.m. They used axes to break the ice to open a passage, then led the moose to the bank.
Shediac RCMP and the Department of Natural Resources assisted with the operation, which took about an hour. Police asked curious onlookers to stay back to avoid scaring the moose and putting the public and rescuers at risk.
It's the second time in three days a wild animal has been rescued from thin ice. On Thursday, a young deer was rescued near Woodstock after getting stranded on the partially frozen Saint John River.
