Voters in seven New Brunswick municipalities cast ballots Monday in byelections that included two mayoral races.

There were vacancies in nine municipalities, but no one offered to run in Campobello or Tracy.

According to Elections N.B., voter turnout was 28.92 per cent.

Arcadia

Clinton Sharpe was elected mayor with 426 votes out of a total 1,065 ballots cast. Arcadia includes the former villages of Gagetown, Jemseg and Cambridge-Narrows.

Belle-Baie

Brigitte Couturier had no competition for Ward 5 councillor and was acclaimed. Just north of Bathurst, Belle-Baie includes the former villages of Beresford, Nigadoo and Petit Rocher.

Fundy Albert

Jim Campbell was elected mayor with 993 out of 1,599 votes cast. Dave Garden was elected Ward 1 councillor with 167 of 280 votes. In late December, the Fundy Albert mayor quit, blaming the province in the wake of issues arising out of amalgamation. The municipality was one of many joined together from smaller communities under the province's 2023 municipal reform. Not long after the mayor's resignation, the deputy mayor also resigned. Fundy Albert includes the former villages of Alma, Riverside-Albert, Hopewell Cape, Hillsborough and Lower Coverdale.

Hartland

George Boone was elected Ward 2 councillor with 147 votes out of a total 265 ballots cast.

Lakeland Ridges

Barbara Glanville was elected Ward 4 councillor with 91 of 127 votes cast. The byelection came after the municipality saw three separate provincial supervisors appointed and council suspended due to rampant infighting and resignations in 2023. The provincial supervision of Lakeland Ridges ended last May. Lakeland Ridges includes the former villages of Canterbury and Meductic.

Memramcook

Etienne Gaudet was elected councillor with 807 votes out of a total 1,345 ballots cast.

Miramichi

This race saw the largest number of ballots cast in the April 14th byelection. Peggy Doyle and Guy Richard were both elected as councillors. Out of 3,906 ballots cast, Doyle received 2,296 votes and Richard received 1,634.

Miramichi River Valley

Two races were held here. Ray Croft was elected councillor at large with 378 of 1,387 votes cast. In Ward 1, Paula Dawn Hare was acclaimed. Miramichi River Valley includes the former villages of Blackville, Renous and Sunny Corner.

Sunbury-York South

There were two seats up for grabs here. Cory Allen was acclaimed as councillor in Ward 1 and Hajnalka Hartwick was acclaimed as councillor in Ward 2. This municipality faced pushback from residents after council proposed spending $8 Million on a new town hall following amalgamation. Just outside of Oromocto, Sunbury-York South includes Waasis, Rusagonis and Nasonworth.
