Trans-Canada Highway closure reduced, more access for residents
Closure now down to 9 kilometres near Jemseg, N.B.
The closed section of Trans-Canada Highway between Fredericton and Moncton was reduced significantly Monday after floodwaters receded, according to the company that maintains the highway.
The closure, which stretched 120 kilometres between Oromocto and River Glade, is now nine kilometres near Jemseg from kilometre 330 to 339, says Al Giberson, general manager and facility manager for MRDC.
He said traffic is still being detoured through Saint John, but there's access for residents from either direction until Jemseg.
Giberson said the water is completely off the pavement and crews have begun clearing debris. A road assessment will take place Tuesday morning, he said.
"That will tell us how far we can open up the highway, whether we can open up one lane or both lanes or travelling in each direction," he told Shift New Brunswick.
In Fredericton, park-and-ride services are still set up at the Regent Mall, Grant-Harvey Centre, Willie O'Ree Place and Brookside Mall.
The service offers a place to park and use the city's regular bus service. Parking is free and the bus costs $2.75 per trip.
People who have city-issued hang tags for downtown parking can use their hang tags to ride the bus.
The bus runs every half-hour during peak times and every hour throughout the day.
