Suspect in Saint John shooting charged with 1st-degree murder

Saint John police have charged a 20-year-old man in connection with a shooting Tuesday morning that resulted in the lockdown of uptown schools and a shelter-in-place warning from police.

Police say two other suspects have now been captured, to face charges soon

A 20-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder and two other suspects have been arrested following the death of another 20-year-old man in uptown Saint John on Tuesday morning.

Police announced Wednesday afternoon that Hayden Donald-Bentley appeared in provincial court. He was remanded into custody and will appear in court next on May 21. 

"Another suspect, a youth, has been arrested, is currently in police custody, and will be appearing in provincial court," the release said. It did not say what charge they would face.

An update late Wednesday said the third suspect was apprehended by Saint John police "with the assistance of" the Kennebecasis Regional Police Force, which polices nearby Rothesay and Quispamsis. The update did not say where the third suspect was apprehended. He is scheduled to appear in provincial court on Thursday, but police did not specify the charge. 

On Tuesday, police were called about shots fired near the corner of Carmarthen Street and King Street East at about 10:30 a.m.

Upon arrival, police found a deceased 20-year-old man in a parking lot near King's Square.

One suspect appeared in court Wednesday, charged with the first-degree murder of a 20-year-old whose body was found in uptown Saint John Tuesday morning. Two other suspects have been arrested.

In an emailed response, Saint John police spokesperson Staff Sgt. Shawna Fowler declined to provide any information about the victim. She also wouldn't provide specifics about the murder weapon used, "to safeguard the integrity of the investigation."

On Tuesday morning, police issued a shelter-in-place warning for the area around the crime scene and later for a neighbourhood on the city's west side. By the afternoon, they issued an alert with a photo of three suspects.
