2 inmates charged after guards attacked
Two inmates are charged in separate attacks on correctional officers at a Dartmouth jail.
Halifax Regional Police charged a 19-year-old man with assault for allegedly punching a guard at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility on Friday evening.
The correctional officer was hit while escorting a prisoner, police said Monday.
Another inmate, a 21-year-old man, is charged with a number of offences in connection with a stabbing at the jail on Saturday afternoon, including aggravated assault, assaulting a peace officer and uttering threats.
Police said the guard was stabbed in the abdomen while inspecting a cell. He went to a hospital and was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said the two violent incidents involved different guards and don't seem to be connected.
The 21-year-old man is due in Dartmouth provincial court on Monday.
No court date has been set for the 19-year-old man.
The jail, which opened in 2001, houses both male and female offenders serving their sentences and people awaiting trial.
