A 61-year-old man is facing attempted murder and various firearm charges after a shooting in northern Cape Breton Sunday afternoon.

In a news release Monday, the RCMP said they received a call just after 4 p.m. on Sunday about a man who arrived at a store in the community of Cape North saying that someone had shot him in the leg with a shotgun.

The victim had driven himself to the store and told police he was shot by a man he knew following an argument, according to the news release. The suspect then ran into into the woods behind a home.

The release said other RCMP resources were called in, including police from other detachments, RCMP police dog services, and the RCMP emergency response team.

The suspect emerged from the woods at around 6 p.m. and was arrested without incident, RCMP said. Police were at the scene on Blaze Road Monday collecting evidence.

The release said the victim was taken to hospital by paramedics and his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Ingonish Beach RCMP have charged the alleged shooter, who is from Cape North, with attempted murder, discharging a firearm with intent, careless use of a firearm and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

The release said he was held in custody overnight and was to appear in Sydney provincial court Monday.
