Corey Blinkhorn, suspect in homeless man beating, arrested

Cape Breton Regional Police have tracked down another suspect in the case of a homeless man who was beaten in North Sydney, N.S., last week.

Officers say Corey Patrick Blinkhorn was caught on Monday evening at 5:30 p.m. near Rateau Street in Sydney Mines, ending a Canada-wide arrest. 

Blinkhorn was being sought for attempted murder, aggravated assault, wearing a disguise while committing an offence and impersonating a police officer in the beating of Shawn Jack.

He will appear in court at a later date.

The arrest follows two arrests made on Saturday.

Police say Northside residents James Darren Clarke, 34, and Gordon William Bobbitt, 47, have been charged with obstruction of justice.

This follows the arrest of three people last week. Kyle William Nichol, 25, of North Sydney, Jennifer MacLeod, 22, of Boularderie and a 16-year-old girl all face charges of aggravated assault and wearing a disguise with intent to commit an offence.

Nichol, who is due to appear in court July 31, is also charged with attempted murder. MacLeod is due in court on Monday for a bail hearing.

Police also searched a home on King Street in North Sydney on Saturday and say they found a wrench and a bandana they believe was used during the assault.

Jack, known in the area as "street dad" was found severely injured in a grocery store parking lot on King Street Monday evening, near where he sometimes camped with his dog, Chico. The 48-year-old was taken to hospital with serious head injuries.

A Little Pond, N.S., woman launched an online fundraiser for Jack on Thursday. By Monday evening, more than $18,000 had been raised through a crowdfunding account on gofundme.com.
