One man is dead and another is in hospital with serious injuries after a single-vehicle crash on Highway 103 in Port Mouton early Friday morning.

RCMP say they were called to the highway between exit 21 at Port Joli and exit 22 at Little Robertsons Lake at 4:53 a.m.

Officers found a man who had been thrown from the vehicle and was on the ground near the car. Police say the 31-year-old driver from Beaver River, N.S., in Digby County, died at the scene.

The passenger in the vehicle had serious injuries, but they are not believed to be life-threatening.

RCMP say the vehicle appeared to have left the highway, striking some trees and landing in the ditch. The cause of the crash is under investigation

Police closed the highway in both directions for about seven hours, causing some traffic tie-ups in the area, which police said has no detour available. The road reopened around 12:30 p.m.
