Dalhousie and King's to lower flags in honour of student killed in Halifax collision

A young woman who died Monday after she was hit by a vehicle in Halifax is being remembered for her compassion, fierce advocacy for social justice and dedication to helping others.

Alexandria Wortman, 21, studied at the University of King's College in Halifax from 2021 to 2022 before transferring to Dalhousie University's faculty of arts and social sciences.

"She abhorred social injustice or inequity and passionately supported and defended any marginalized, under-privileged or at-risk group or individual," said Wortman's obituary.

"She would fiercely advocate for human rights, diversity, and inclusion at any opportunity."

Wortman, who was born in Moncton, N.B., and was a 2021 graduate of Riverview High School, had a deep love for working with children and had planned to become a teacher, her obituary said.

In a joint statement, King's and Dalhousie described Wortman's "membership  and contribution" to their communities and said the universities would honour her by lowering their campus flags to half-mast on Feb. 12, which would have been her 22nd birthday.

Wortman was struck by a vehicle while crossing an intersection in central Halifax on Jan. 27.

The driver, a 32-year-old man, has been charged with multiple offences, including operating a conveyance causing death, impaired driving causing death and leaving the scene of an accident.
