Eliahs Kent, mistakenly released from Burnside jail, back in custody
Corrections officials investigating why 'dangerous' man facing attempted murder charge released
A man charged with attempted murder is back in custody after being mistakenly released from the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility on Friday.
Halifax Regional Police said Saturday that Eliahs Knedsen Kent was found in the Spryfield area and arrested at about 2 p.m. AT after a short pursuit on foot.
Police had been looking for the 22-year-old since Friday morning, when the correctional facility accidentally released him.
Justice Minister Lena Diab asked the public to keep watch for Kent, but not to approach him.
"I'm angry. I'm appalled. I don't know how something this serious could happen," she said Friday. "This individual is dangerous."
Corrections officials are investigating.
Sean Kelly, director of correctional services, said Friday that Kent was "released in error," but didn't elaborate on what happened.
Police said corrections officials advised them Friday at 9:18 a.m. that Kent was out.
Police said Kent was being held on remand and facing a variety of charges, including attempted murder, home invasion, attempt to commit robbery, robbery, robbery to steal a firearm, using a firearm in the commission of an offence and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
