Ellie Black earns silver at Commonwealth Games

Gymnast Ellie Black from Halifax has been awarded a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Halifax gymnast will compete in uneven bars later Thursday, balance beam and floor on Friday

A second medal is a possibility later Thursday when Black competes in uneven bars. She can also capture medals on Friday in the balance beam and floor competitions.

Gymnast Ellie Black from Halifax has been awarded a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Black placed second in the women’s vault finals with a score of 14.433. The gold medal went to Claudia Fragapane of England with a 14.633. Placing third was India.

Later on Thursday Black will have a chance to win a second medal when she competes in uneven bars. She can also capture medals on Friday in the balance beam and floor competitions.

The 19-year-old was part of the Canadian team that finished a surprising fifth, its best-ever result, in the team event at the London Olympics. Black is also a two-time national all-around champ who placed eighth in the floor event and 13th in the all-around at last year's world championships.

Gymnastics is a sport in which Canada has excelled at the Commonwealth Games in the past.

Though Canada won only eight gymnastics medals in 2010, the country still ranks second all-time with 115 podium finishes.

Australia dominated in the last Commonwealth Games in Delhi, winning 21 medals to move into the all-time lead with 126.
