We asked you to share your #CBCGreatest Gifts with us. Today, Halifax Mayor Mike Savage tells us about one of the best gifts he has ever received.

Mike Savage had just gotten back to campus for his second year at Dalhousie when he started noticing a certain girl.

She was a King’s student, and he thought there was no point in asking her out.

"She was out of my league," he says.

He gave it a shot anyway, and "amazingly," they started dating. But then Christmas approached.

"When you come to that first Christmas as a couple in university, you think, do you spend on her?" he remembered this week.

"Do you not spend on her? Do you want to seem like you’re too clingy, or not clingy enough?"

He decided not to go too flashy and doesn’t remember what he bought — probably some jewelry, something safe.

The gift she gave him was the best one Halifax’s mayor has ever gotten.

"She bought me a pair of Frye boots," he said. "Beautiful boots, expensive, and it just blew me away. It was nice, and I knew that she was out of my league … so it was cool.

"And we’ve been married for 27 years."

Savage still has them somewhere.

"I wore them all the time," he said. "I had this very handsome corduroy long coat that I thought was very cool, except when I look back at it now, I shudder. But the boots, that was pure class."
