Halifax police are investigating after a fight at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility Monday sent one inmate to hospital requiring surgery.

Police said there was an assault involving two inmates at the Burnside jail around 7 p.m.

Healthcare professionals at the facility responded immediately and then followed policy and notified police.

The injured inmate was taken to hospital Tuesday afternoon around 1 p.m. to undergo surgery for injuries sustained in the fight.

Halifax Regional Police are investigating the incident. As of Tuesday evening, police had not yet had a chance to interview the victim.
