Two kitchen sinks, a motor boat console and a plastic palm tree are just some of the items now heading to a landfill after the annual cleanup effort on McNabs Island this weekend.

About 250 volunteers travelled to the provincial park in Halifax Harbour on Sunday to pick up litter.

This year 450 bags of trash were collected.

Their haul included a toy fox without its stuffing, an old kettle, several lawn chairs, beach umbrellas and fishing rods.

The Friends of McNabs Island group says they mostly found plastic items, including broken fish crates, plastic sheeting and plastic tampon applicators.

They also noted a number of Tim Hortons cups.

Volunteer scuba divers also chipped in by cleaning up around the shoreline.

The park is a magnet for junk. Litter often collects on the island after winter storms.

The group says volunteers have collected more than 12,000 bags of garbage and recyclables from the island site since 1991.
