Windsor's annual pumpkin regatta cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns

It has been 12 days since Nova Scotia identified a new case of COVID-19. No new cases were identified among 1,151 tests completed by the province on Friday. Meanwhile the annual pumpkin regatta in Windsor, N.S., has been cancelled because of the pandemic.

What would have been the 22nd annual pumpkin regatta in Windsor, N.S., has been cancelled.

VanEssa Roberts, the logistics co-ordinator for the regatta held each year on Lake Pesaquid, said COVID-19 concerns are the main reason for the cancellation.

"It is a family fun event and our crowds are 10,000 and upwards," Roberts said. "And obviously under our restrictions within Nova Scotia, there's just no way we could keep everyone socially distanced, keep everybody happy and healthy dealing with that kind of crowd in a small area."

The regatta was temporarily shelved last year because of a shortage of suitable pumpkins, but the race ended up going ahead with fewer participants.

Despite the cancellation, Roberts said there are still plenty of fall activities on the go in and around Windsor.

"Our restaurants are open and there are tons of walking trails. [The Dill Farm] is still going to be putting on a small pumpkin weigh-off this year ... so there's a lot things that are staying the same, they're just scaled back."

No new cases in Nova Scotia

As of Saturday, there are no known active cases of COVID-19 left in Nova Scotia.

No new cases were identified among 1,151 tests completed by the province on Friday, according to a news release from the Health Department.

Nova Scotia has recorded  86,859 negative test results, 1,086 positive results and 65 deaths since March.

The latest numbers from around the Atlantic bubble are:

  • New Brunswick reported no new cases Saturday and has one active case.
  • Newfoundland and Labrador reported one new case and two active cases Friday.
  • P.E.I. reported Tuesday it had one active case.

Symptoms

Anyone with one of the following symptoms of COVID-19 should go to this website to see if they should call 811 for further assessment:

  • Fever.
  • Cough or worsening of a previous cough.

Anyone with two or more of the following symptoms is also asked to visit the 811 website:

  • Sore throat.
  • Headache.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Runny nose.
