A nine-year-old boy is dead and his mother is in critical condition after a fire in Port Hawkesbury, N.S., Friday night, according to police.

He was airlifted to hospital in critical condition, but died Monday morning. A spokeswoman for the fire marshal's office called it an "accidental fire" at the kitchen range.

A steady stream of people have been placing flowers and stuffed animals in front of the house.

Friends say the Grade 4 student was polite, loved baseball and judo and would often sit with his neighbours on Bourinot Drive to chat.

Grief counseling has been set up at the local school.

The mother remains in hospital.

RCMP are not releasing the boy's name while they notify his family.

An autopsy is scheduled for this week.

Curtis Doucet, the chief of the Port Hawkesbury Volunteer Fire Department, said the kitchen and some of the upstairs was damaged, but the home is still standing.

It's still under investigation.
