Significant snowfall closes many N.S. schools, universities
Few flight cancellations reported at Halifax airport
Many schools in Nova Scotia were closed Monday, thanks to a winter storm that brought the first significant snowfall of the season to the province.
The closures affected schools in the Annapolis Valley, in the Truro area, along the South Shore and in parts of Cape Breton, as well as in the Digby and the Halifax areas. Many French public schools were closed as well.
Most universities and Nova Scotia Community College campuses were shut down for the day.
CBC meteorologist Tina Simpkin said some inland areas have received as much as 20 centimetres of snow and it's still falling.
At the Halifax airport, there were a few cancellations, but most arrivals and departures were on time.
Canada Post warned there might be delays to mail delivery in the province. It cancelled delivery for the day in Bridgewater and Kentville.
Nova Scotia Power reported thousands of customers were without electricity. As of 7:17 p.m. AT, most outages had been restored, with roughly 950 customers still without electricity.
As the system tracked eastward, the snow was expected to taper off in the west Monday afternoon. Heavy snow mixing with rain and ice pellets was forecast for the eastern mainland through to Cape Breton, with temperatures rising slowly during the afternoon.
