A 16 -year-old-girl was sentenced Wednesday to nine months for her role in the brutal attack in July of a man living in a tent behind a North Sydney grocery store.

The teenager was with five other people when Shawn Kurtis Jack was beaten with a torque wrench and a mechanic’s hammer.

Jack remains in hospital. He's being fed through a tube and will need surgery and extensive rehabilitation.

Crown prosecutor Glenn Gouthro says while the teen didn't beat the man, she was a party to what happened.

"She knew what was going to happen when the group went there to confront Mr. Jack and didn't do anything to prevent it, didn't do anything to assist Mr. Jack after it was over," Gouthro said.

The girl was given credit for four months already spent in custody. She will be held for another two months at the Nova Scotia Youth Detention Centre in Waterville, before serving three months in the community under supervision of a probation officer.

The girl must also live under a number of conditions for the next 20 months.

Judge Jean Whalen told the teen that if she doesn't stop drinking and doing drugs she will either die, or end up in jail.

Four of the five other people charged in the case remain in custody.

All are awaiting various court appearances; the next one will be in December.
